| The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho was an important literary phenomenon of the 20th century. Paulo Coelho was born in Rio de Janeiro on August, 24, 1947. Before dedicating his life completely to literature, he worked as theatre director and actor, lyricist and journalist. At the beginning of his career he failed to make any kinds of impact by his work Hell Archives which was published in 1982. In 1988, he published The Alchemist which brought the author world popularity. It reached the first place on bestselling lists in 18 countries, and so far has sold 30 million copies. His writings in The Alchemist enrich readers with words of wisdom, philosophy, and simplicity of meaning and language. It also enriches the reader with words of biblical value as in the Holy Bible. In The Alchemist there is Melchizedek who has an important role in the story even though he is not the main character. The readers can get a reflection on life through the story, and also some spiritual values. There are four main moral messages that the readers can learn. First, hear what our hearts say. Second, keep dreaming and never give up reaching for our dreams. Thirdly the real treasure is in our heart. And the last, but not the least, is that nothing is impossible in our lives as long as you wish for it with all of your heart.
