Abstract
Count Leo Tolstoy was one of the world’s greatest novelists who also became a religious philosopher in his later years. He faced a mid-life crisis which caused him to view Art as useless unless it served a higher purpose. It was after writing two of his
major philosophical works namely: A Confession, and The Kingdom of God Is Within You; that he published his last major novel, Resurrection.
This paper shows that several of his major philosophical ideas were included within Resurrection. The first major idea is that faith is the power of human life. This teaching was transmitted via Prince Nekhlyudov who experiences a personal crisis that causes him to reconnect with the spiritual voice within him just as Tolstoy himself had.
The second idea is that all religions have a universal truth that conveys the meaning of
life to all mankind. This concept was shown in Prince Nekhlyudov’s struggle to free people imprisoned by the Russian Orthodox Church because of their religious belief and the character of an old sage who stated the fundamental unity of all faiths. The third idea is living an ascetic life to be close to God. Tolstoy showed that asceticism by Prince Nekhlyudov renouncing his ownership of private property and voluntarily leaving the
aristocratic Moscow life for the exile to Siberia. The fourth idea is that of non-violence as the path of Love, which had a profound effect on Mahatma Gandhi who followed this path to free his country from British Imperial rule. Prince Nekhlyudov realises the truth of the Christian teaching of forgiveness and understands that men being evil cannot punish other men nor resist evil with violence. The fifth idea is that hypocrisy is the
greatest sin which was shown as the falseness of both the ruling elites and especially the ii
priests of the Russian Orthodox Church enabling the virtual enslavement of the majority of the Russian people to serve the needs of the Russian Imperial family.
Finally, Tolstoy advocates the idea of using public opinion to spread the truth to the people of Russia and the world so that the circumstances of the Russian society and humanity in general would be altered.
