Isi artikelJambi is a riverfront city that developed from economic activity. Initially, agriculture and plantation, especially in rubber and coconut, were the most dominant in the economic activity in Jambi area. The agriculture and plantation were located closed to the river basin along the Batanghari River. In this period, the urban morphology grew into a “ribbon shaped city”. Before 1920, the economic were dominated by the Chinese trader. The Chinese trader connected local trader and foreign trader in Singapore through the river. In 1926, the Dutch built a new port in Jambi city. Consequently, there was decreasing of the Chinese domination in trade and economic activity in Jambi. During 1926-1942 there was an economic boom in Jambi city. In addition, there was also an increase of the trade between Jambi city and Singapore through the water transportation. The paper analyzes the growth of the Jambi urban morphology from “ribbon shaped city” into “fan shaped city”, and from water transportation into land transportation. Both processes influenced by the economic activity.
