The study of the early development of social cognition has enjoyed a renaissance over the last 25 years, and there have been many good authored books on the topic during that time. Leading the way was Judy Dunn’s (1988) The Beginnings of Social Understanding, which showed how the early development of children’s thinking about the social world was highly dependent on the interactions children experienced. As research on social understanding became dominated by the theory of mind approach from the late 1980s through the 1990s, a number of classic volumes appeared. I was most impressed by HenryWellman’s (1990) The Child’s Theory of Mind, Josef Perner’s (1991b) Understanding the Representational Mind, and Janet Astington’s (1993) The Child’s Discovery of the Mind. |
