Isi artikelThe concept of group development is quite compelling. The idea that a group is more than the sum of its human parts and that groups move through predictable phases or stages is at once fascinating and a bit threatening. Our collective fascination with the concept has generated more than 40 years of inquiry attempting to discover if, and how, group development occurs. These inquiries have led to the general conclusion that groups do develop across time (Bales, Cohen, & Williamson, 1980; Bell, 1982; Brower, 1986; Cissna, 1984; Hartman, 1979; Yalom, 1975). This conclusion is not without its critics, however. Research on group development is so difficult and time-consuming that many more investigations will be necessary to fully explore this concept.
