Isi artikelOne of the most delightful scenes in &dquo; My Fair Lady.&dquo; deals with Professor Henry Higgins’s first field tryout in connection with his Eliza Doolittle Project. It will be remembered that Higgins has undertaken to change Eliza in six months from &dquo;a squashed cabbage leaf&dquo; from they gutters of London into a lady - even one who could be taken for a duchess. He proposes to do this by using the latest language teaching techniques to lead her to abandon her own cockney dialect and speak instead the English of the social elite. After some weeks of work, he takes her to a tea-party attended by a group of upper-class young people. Eliza performs magnificently; her accent is pure Received Pronunciation - but the grammar and lexis of her utterances have remained sub-standard. To the other guests at the tea-party, it is inconceivable that a speaker of RP caq be using sub-standard forms. They conclude, consequently, that Eliza is up-to-date with the very latest slang and they begin to copy her.
