This paper aims at clarifying the concept of situational constraints on the use of the English language. It focuses on describing the range of choice in the use of the English verb, both lexically and structurally, as manifested in a synchronic corpus of varying register. It demonstrates to what extent register, the variety of language according to use, exercises constraints on the native-speaker’s selection of lexical verbs and verb structures in discourse and in writing.
