The book under review considers in some detail the role played by the British Library Research and Development Department (BLRDD) in promoting and financing research in the library and information science field, over a 20 year period. The reviewer considers this particularly from the public libraries perspective. Concludes that the brief of the book has generally been satisfied and the account of the BLRDD’s activities is comprehensive. The book confirms the concern, felt by many com mentators and practitioners for several years, that the need for research into public library issues has been neglected.
