A great deal of research has been done on interpretation in reading English as a first language. What is lacking is research on a number of questions concerning interpretation in reading English as a second language. This article is an attempt to answer some of these questions. It examines the contribution of research on interpretation in first-language reading with a view to highlighting the need for similar research in the second language context. It then presents and discusses fmdings of a study on interpretation in reading English as a second language. 1
