Reviews the changes taking place in the library and information profession in South Africa as a result of the social and political changes taking place in the country as a whole and considers the degree to which the profession is considering its role as an agent of positive change. Argues that the provision of information in this context should be aimed at neighborhood and communities with the central idea that the public library should provide community information which is relevant and supportive of the democratic process in South Africa. Considers what is needed in a community information service in post-apartheid South Africa
