The stimulation afforded by the complex sociolinguistic setting of Singapore and the acute interest in matters linguistic in the context of economic/national development have recently given impetus to numerous studies and discussions within academic and other programmes and in a number of different EVENTS. Conversely, these EVENTS as well as a number of related processes such as training programmes, may provide some conceptual input into the thinking of both the higher policy-making echelons as well as the implementing branches of the Government in issues of language and, more specifically, language and education. Thus, I have attempted here to examine the flow of ideas, beliefs and the like concerning language and its use within the communities of language specialists and practitioners. I have also tried to probe into the formation of networks, network linkages and associations which eventually contribute to the overall conceptual and belief landscape on matters of language, culture, society, education and development.
