Isi artikel
It could have been a simple yearning for change, or it could have been the influence of &dquo;Star Wars,&dquo; but, of late, some language teachers have switched from the use of words like approach, trend, movement, school, methodology - all neutral and rather colorless terms - to the militantsounding and undeniably vigorous word force (Jakobovits 1976). Whether this change reflects the language teachers’ desire to combat years and years of frustration and defeat, I cannot tell. But I do know, being a language teacher myself, that we are still searching for more effective ways of teaching languages. Could it be possible that the answer is to be found in the hitherto ignored and neglected, because seemingly simple and unpretentious, methods of language teaching? After the heady and breathtaking triumphs of science and technology, the solemn warning voices of ecologists and humanists began to fill the air. Today, for example, E.F. Schumacher’s doctrine &dquo;small is beautiful&dquo; is converting former over-zealous believers in unlimited growth, who now realize that the &dquo;sky is the limit&dquo; theory gravely endangers man’s survival.
