Every one learning a second language knows that it involves more than just acquiring the sounds, the grammar, and the new vocabulary. It requires as well the ability to effectively use the language in a social setting. But even though there is general agreement that second language learning involves such social competence, little has been written on the nature of just what it is that must be acquired.
