According to Brehm (1992), male and female in general have difference communication style. Male tend to use instumental style of communication and female tend to use expressive style of communication. The purpose of this study is to explain the difference between male and female in terms of the style of communication they use when dealing with interpersonal conflict with their romantic partner. Data for this study were obtained from 32 students from Universitas Indonesia selected by incidental sampling and consisted of 15 male and 17 female students. They were compared on measures of communication style typology. This study found that instrumental communication was the one type that were used the most. When using expressive or instrumental communication style, there is no difference in male and female in terms of the frequency. Discussion focuses on the difference of the result with Brehm’s theory and on potential directions for further study on communication style in romantic relationship.
