Isi artikelNetworking as defined by Meadows is surveyed with particular reference to the North West. The impact of premechanical systems on book availability, from the creation of the Central Library for Students to the present-day operations of the North Western Regional Library Bureau and its commitment to VISCOUNT, is examined. Two local co-operative networks, the Leighton scheme and North East Lancashire Libraries, are dealt with in detail. Automated networking in the North West is still i n its infancy, although some of the universities and polytechnics have had long-standing involvements with SWALCAP or BLCMP. The significance of JANET in offering possibilities for library networking is recognized.
