Isi artikel
This article is extracted from a much longer survey of research on academic libraries, currently being undertaken or recently completed, in the Federal Republic of Germany. In his survey Dr Koch describes the development and present state of library research and outlines the work of the three principal funding agencies: the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG; German Research Council), the Deutsches Bibliotheksinstitut (DBI; German Library Institute) and the Gesellschaft f3r Information und Dokumentation (GID; Society for Information and Documentation); all these receive substantial support from the Federal Government. A number of user studies and investigations of public relations, user education and library statistics are described in detail. In some cases the administrative structure of German academic libraries, which are normally funded by the Provincial Government but sometimes separately from their universities, may make it difficult to transfer the results of the research to another country; this is true particularly of the relationship of central and departmental libraries. However, it was felt that the group of projects described in the sections below was likely to be especially relevant to the discussions on library standards now taking place in the UK and elsewhere. Copies of the full report will be available from the British Library Research & Development Department, Sheraton House, Great Chapel Street, London W 1 V 4BH.
