Isi artikelThe new role accorded to English at the University level in Malaysia does have far reaching implications for its teaching objective pertaining to ‘ English. It is felt that at this point of tertiary education, the teaching of English should concentrate on what is considered to be the most urgent need of the undergraduates, especially those from the Malay-medium schools. There is some uncertainty and disagreement as to what specific skills should be emphasised, with the constraints of time, necessity and student study priorities. Many have argued that the reading skill stands out most starkly as the skill to be improved upon.
