Although IRFA enabled several research Bhore Committee (1946)on medical and health services noted inefficiencies in the utilization of personnel and facilities and recommended: (1)establishment of a centre for postgraduate training and research; (2)setting up of special institutes for research into specific diseases; and (3) creation of a statutory body for the purpose of formulating policies for development of medical research in universities, and selection and training of research workers. Consequently, the Indian Council of Medical Research was established in 1949 to support and coordinate the bulk of the country's medical research. This review outlines its organization and activities, which include the maintenance of several major research institutions; formation of "expert groups" (e.g., research into medical education); organization of conferences and workshops; undertaking of several epidemiological studies. There is a brief discussion of progress made in the fields of communicable diseases, malnutrition, reproductive biology, pharmaceuticals, and clinical research, and a note on the vital role played by ancillary and support services for dissemination of knowledge, such as good scientific publications, professional societies, libraries, and other information centres.
