This article is based on a paper delivered to SCONUL at the University of East Anglia on 30 March 1982. After a brief view of the history of international rare-book librarianship, the article discusses the relevance of the IFLA doctrines of UBC and UAP for the strategy and tactics of recording, preserving and developing the rare-book stock of the United Kingdom.
