In order to develop second language teaching methodology rationally, the factors that determine it must first be identified. Fundamentally, teaching is concerned with finding ways to promote learning and three factors seem crucial in determining second language learning: the nature of language, the nature of the learner, and the nature of the learning environment (especially the society).
