Early literature for nurses is more substantial than has hitherto been recognized. Its content and quantity are examined as evidence to support this view. The extent of early libraries for nurses cannot be appreciated if the literature is underestimated. Some examples of libraries for nurses are examined. It is concluded that any inadequacy in library facilities was caused by the geographical distribution of hospitals and lack of administrative centralization rather than absence of a literature.
