This document is a guide for all members of the medical profession receiving patients in their own offices or hospital clinics. It covers the administrative practices with which the doctor/nurse must comply and indicates the number of patients to be examined on an hourly basis. In Costa Rica, the rural health centre's most important service is that of maternal care. Maternity auxiliaries are appointed by the Ministry of Public Health subject to prior approval by the Nursing Department of the Ministry. However, doctors must be present at difficult births.
