Abstract
The Ramathibodi community health programme, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand, was the result of a realization that present medical education was not preparing the rural health team to meet the needs of the population. Despite the underutilization of health centres by the people, government health personnel (especially physicians)were reluctant to carry services out of the health centre and into the community. As manpower and faciliti were limited - health centres had been implemented in only 260 of the country's 550 rural health districts - optimum use of existing resources was mandatory. Therefore, the Faculty of Medicine and the Ministry of Health created a community health team to design and continuously evaluate an interdepartmental programme aimed at comprehensive health care. The result was the Ramathibodi community health programme. A rural district about an hour's drive from the university was selected as a rural teaching and research centre where students could acquire practical experience in problem-solving. A notable feature of the programme is that students are not educated in isolation; since it is recognized that members of the health team must functi coordinated unit, all categories of personnel have access to the teaching centre. The programme's philosophy, objectives, development, organization, and administration are outlined.
