A holistic paradigm that asserts there is one interconnected reality of which we are all a part and can all be aware invites exploration of the role of dissociative processes in our search for transcendence and wholeness. This studywas conducted to ascertain the properties and experience of “directed dissociation,” one construct on the Spectrum of Dissociation developed by the author. Directed dissociation categorizes dissociative phenomena that are intentionally produced and directed, including certain out-of-body experiences. In-depth interviews with eight individuals representing four original nationalities and a variety of professions were conducted to explore the ability to produce dissociative states repeatedly; the mechanics of creating, directing, terminating, and integrating such states; and their effect on life. Commonalities were found in each area and a progressive tendency within the nonpathological end of the Spectrum of Dissociation was indicated. Similarities were apparent betweenMaslow’s selfactualizing individuals and those who participated in this study.
