Isi artikel
Institutions concerned with the teaching of English for academic purposes are increasingly focusing their courses on the teaching of reading, where this skill seems to be the major, if not the only, student need. Many of these institutions are equipped with language laboratories, some of which are ignored as white elephants inherited from the days when listening and speaking were considered mandatory components of any language course. On the other hand, other institutions regard language laboratories as expensive investments which should not lie idle. While the former attitude entails waste of equipment, the latter can and frequently does result in arbitrary utilization of the lab for tasks of dubious value to the student of reading.
