I have elsewhere (Abbott 1980) described the development of a procedure for describing errors without making any prejudicial assumptions about their causes. That descriptive stage was, however, little more than a preparatory arrangement of the errors into patterns, just as troops are put on parade in orderly ranks, ready for inspection. This article will deal with procedures and problems in the explanatory stage of an analysis - the attempt to show how the errors came about.
