Isi artikelThe idea of discourse is not at all easy to convey. Moreover it is extremely difficult to find a single definition which fits all situations. ’Discourse’ here refers to the written language. In general, the foreign language teacher knows that there is such a thing as discourse, but is a little wary of having anything to do with it because it invariably raises problems, not the least of which is that if one tries to analyse the discourse of a text there are numerous ways of doing it, and no single correct answer. As for the learner of a foreign language, it seems, again in general, that he or she not only fails to transfer the techniques of decoding discourse which must have been acquired to a greater or lesser degree in the native language, but also shows little awareness of the concept. In classroom terms, what this means is that if asked to read a text, and then asked the standard question ‘What is this about?’ he is likely to choose any one of a number of details in the passage but is quite incapable of fitting or reorganizingl those details into the whole, even where there are no serious problems with the syntax or the lexis. If the latter problems also exist there is of course a much higher probability that the learner will not detect the discourse.
