Isi artikel
Cantrall (1973) investigated the effect that intonational cues have on a native English speaker’s interpretation of ambiguous sentences. He reported that &dquo;unexpected identities are signalled by marked stress. When there is no such intonational cue signalling that the identities are unexpected, the subject feels confirmed in his choice of most likely meaning.&dquo; On the whole, subjects in Cantrall’s study chose the most likely meaning guided by their individual prepositions and their own experience rather than by pitch and stress signals.
