Isi artikelIt is well known that the English article is the smallest, but one of the most difficult grammatical items for non-native English students to learn (e.g. Lacey 1977). Teachers of English also have a great deal of trouble in teaching English articles to non-native English learners. Native speakers teaching English in EFL (English as a Foreign Language) countries sometimes say that in most cases their students’ usage bears little or no resemblance to established English practice; the students seem to use articles almost randomly. If they really use articles in a random way and only know that there are three types of article in English, i.e. the definite (the), indefinite (a/an), and zero (0) articles, then the probability of the ’accuracy’ of their use would be around 33.3% (1/3). In this paper, sampling Japanese students learning EFL, we will investigate how they use English articles.
