Isi artikel
Fossilization is defined as the process by which linguistic items, rules, or subsystems become permanently incorporated into the interlanguage (IL) of a language learner, regardless of the learner’s age or the amount of instruction in the target language (TL) (Selinker 1974:118). A description and account of fossilization has been the goal of most second language acquisition (SLA) research in recent years. Indeed, models of SLA must incorporate an account of fossilization, because explaining fossilization is equivalent to answering the most basic question in SLA: Why do a few adult learners acquire a second language completely while most learners fail to achieve adequate proficiency? Researchers generally reformulate this basic question in the following manner (cf. Selinker and Lamendella 1978:149).
