Isi artikelI find John Pride’s paper interesting for three reasons. The first reason is a rather personal one: his observations make me nostalgic about the &dquo;Edinburgh days&dquo; of the late 1950s and the early 1960s. These issues were discussed in Edinburgh then with J.R. Firth, M.A.K. Halliday, and others. It was soon after that that some of us extensively applied the concepts of &dquo;transfer&dquo; and &dquo;nativization&dquo; to the description and analysis of non-native English texts (see, e.g., Kachru 1965, 1966, and later; see also 1983). If I am not mistaken, parts of those years were also Pride’s &dquo;Edinburgh days,.&dquo;
