Isi artikelSince 1986, a special project has been under way in the London Borough of Harrow. Its purpose has been to introduce the music of different cultures into the classrooms of primary and secondary schools. Between 1986 and 1989, the programme involved the work of six performers, each of them highly conversant with the music of their particular culture. The six cultures were Indian music and dance, Latin American/rock, steel pans (West Indian steel band instruments), jazz, tabla (Indian drums) and Chinese music and movement. This article attempts to place the Harrow project in the wider context of music and multicultural education. The discussion begins with an examination of the model upon which the programme is based. Attention is then focused upon the four processes which are central to many curricula: (1) determining aims and objectives, (2) selecting learning experiences, (3) organising learning experiences and (4) conducting assessment and evaluation. In each section, the relationship between the general issues and the Harrow project is clearly delineated.
