Isi artikelpaper is an attempt to describe and analyse the speech behaviour of one particular ethnic minority in Australia which is said to constitute the fifth biggest overseas-born group from outside the British Isles, i.e. the German speech community in Canberra. It is not the purpose of this paper to describe the linguistic competence of the German community members, but rather their use of German and/or English in different situations from the perspective of the sociology of language. Although the status and function of the German language in Australia has been reported widely by Clyne (e.g. 1967, 1972), there exist as yet no linguistic or sociolinguistic accounts of the national capital of Australia, i.e. Canberra. A historical sketch of the German migration waves from the beginning in 1788 will be given in order to situate the German speech community of Canberra within a broader socio-historical context. Language ecology factors contributing to language maintenance or language shift and the use of German in different domains will be evaluated and contrasted to the findings of Clyne. On the basis of questionnaires which were sent to 59 German residents of Canberra it was possible to identify the status and functions of the German language in specific network structures.
