A 20-year-old college basketball player presents to the emergency department with a 2-day history of a red, painful area on his right buttock. He reports that there was no specific trauma to this area but that he had participated in several basketball games over the past several weeks at various schools throughout the United States. He believes he may have had a low-grade fever the night before but did not take his temperature. He has no chronic medical conditions and is taking no medications.
