One of the most famous events of the Indonesian Revolution in Sultan Hamengku Buwono's successful defianced of the Dutch occupation of his city of Yogyakarta from December 1984 to June 1949. It may be timely to re-examine the episode, bearing in mind that Hamengku Buwono's early career established the unusual constitutional arrangements in the Yogyakarta Special District which still remain in place today, nearly 60 years later.
