Isi artikelRecently, some Indonesian Primary Schools put reading and writing skills as one of the criteria for entering grade one. “Whole Language Belief” says that reading and also writing cannot be taught by chunking a sentence into words. It has to be done by giving the children the whole sentence ant let them create meaning. One of the whole language activities is telling a story by using a big book that is a big size book contains enlarged picture and completed by text. This research was aimed at creating a teaching model based on Big Book Strategy and to find possibilities for implementing the strategy. Research finding showed that: at the end of the program 14% samples cannot read and write but the rest of them are able to read and write and completely understand a story of a big book, samples can really understand what a word or a sentence means, so that the children can comprehend and summarize a story, samples love books and have high motivation to read, learning become joyful activities for children and teachers, various media can motivate children to learn, and Big Book can also be used to teach moral and ethic. On the basis of research finding it was suggested that: (1) A- proper strategy was needed in teaching reading and writing; (2) Standardized big books were needed as well as evaluation instruments.
