This article was based on a study conducted in 1999 to learn graduate perceptions of their Indonesian Open University (UT)'s degrees in employment market in North Sumatera. Questionnaires were mailed to 100 graduates with 40 graduates send back the filled questionnaires. In the opinion of the samples majority, UT degrees are considered by employers and colleagues at work as equivalent to the degrees awarded by conventional universities. The majority of UT's graduates also consider that UT degrees have contributed their job changing. To a majority of graduates, the new jobs have brought better chances to take responsibility, better chances to use knowledge and skills, better intrinsic motivation in work, as well as better chances of promotion. It is therefore recommended that UT puts more efforts in public relation in order to strengthen UT's recognition before public.
