Isi artikelFactors affecting the performance of students enrolled in an Elementary Differential Equations course in the Mathematics Department, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, the Indonesian Open Learning University were investigated in this paper. Four main factors affecting student performance, such as: (i) situational, (ii) institutional, (iii) dispositional, and (iv) epistemology were elucidated by considering students’ achievement in five different examination periods. Other factors such as, the modules (printed course materials), exam materials, students' response to exams, and both written and oral comments from students solicited after the exams were also taken into account in this study. The results showed that the most dominating factor affecting students performance was epistemology factor, i.e., lack of prerequisite knowledge.
