The effect of word frequency on familiarity-based and recollection-based recognition was examined in three experiments. Experiment 1 combined Jacoby's (1991) logic of opposition with Gardiner's (1988) remember/know paradigm to provide converging evidence regarding the locus of the recognition word frequency effect. Both measures supported the view that the word frequency effect in recognition is primarily a recollection-based phenomenon. Experiments 2 and 3 examined one possible source for word frequency effects on recollection: memory for mental operations. The findings indicated that subjects were better at remembering the mental operations utilized at study for low frequency than for high frequency words. The implications of these findings for models of recognition memory and for understanding the contrasting effects of word frequency of recognition versus recall are discussed. @ 1997 Academic Press
