Stemmer’s paper makes several intriguing suggestions concerning the acquisition of syntax. One of the most interesting of these is the proposal that children learn basic word-order rules when learning the meanings of words, using only general learning capacities. Consequently, it is this particular proposal that I want to focus upon in this commentary. Specifically, there are four questions which I would like to raise concerning this proposal.
