This study was designed to investigate the way teachers think and behave in the process of planning their teaching activities. It seeked for realistic and grounded information on this planning process. This will hopefully provide important information to design good teaching plans and popularize them among teachers. Two hundred questionnaires (out of 853 sent to the teachers at Universitas Indonesia, Institut Teknologi Bandung, Universitas Gajah Mada, and Institut Pertanian Bogor) had been filled out and sent back to the researchers and processed. These four universities were selected since it was assumed that they already possess experienced and qualified teachers. The most important findings of this research are as follows: 1. Teaching plans (consisting four major components, i.e. objectives, materials, evaluation, and teaching strategies) are considered highly important by most teachers; 2. Most teachers believe that teaching plans should be in written form; 3. Teaching plans should be communicated to students; 4. The way teachers think about teaching plans is not significantly affected by other variables such as teacher backgrounds, universities, or disciplines.
