This article discussed, in chronological order, the history of the autonomy and democratization of Kotapraja Yogyakarta from 1945 through 1957. Autonomy was defined as self-government while democratization was defined as governing by the people. The delegation of power to the people was considered as a fundamental change in Yogyakarta because never before in history have the people been given the power to govern themselves. Eventhough the DPR of Kotapraja Yogyakarta was established, democratization was hindered by the central government. It was not until June 7 1947 that the central government gave way for Yogyakarta to become autonomous through the issuance of Undang-Undang No. 17 1947. After struggling for three years, in 1950 Kotapraja Yogyakarta was able to exercise its autonomy. The final struggle for Yogyakarta autonomy ended in 1957 when Undang-Undang No. 1 1957 was issued.
