West Kalimantan, situated on the east coast of the Kalimantan island and bordering with Malaysia, has a very strategic position when seen from the national defense system of the Republic of Indonesia. The efforts to increase national defense is closely related to the efforts to increase the welfare and security of a nation. This paper identifies and discusses the results of analizing the facts that might threaten the national defense. The analysis found that the strategy for development of the West Kalimantan people should focus on the agricultural and forestly sector. Both of these sectors are the backbone of the regions development involving approximately 80 percent of the existing work force. Socialization and understanding of the concept of sustainable land management and collaborative business, as well as women empowerment/development are other issues that needs consideration.
