The director of the Yale University Artificial Intelligence Project explains in this interview that the application of machine intelligence in various forms should eventually bring important economic and social changes in industrialized and developing countries. But he stresses that many hard scientific and engineering problems remain to be solved to make artificial intelligence applications widely applicable. The interview was conducted by Stewart W. Ramsey, editor-in-chief of Economic Impact. Roger C. Schank is professor of computer science and psychology and chairman of the Computer Science Department at Yale University. A leader in the field of artifical intelligence in the United States, he also heads an artificial intelligence firm, Cognitive Systems, Inc., and is president of COputeach, Inc. Dr. Schank is the author of several books, the most recent of which is The Cognitive Computer: On Language, Learning, and Artificial Intelligence.
