Isi artikelSurveying the history of the growth of both social welfare benefits and economic prosperity in industrialized democracies over several centuries, the author explains that although social rights and private property rights may occasionally appear to be in conflict, it "is a limited conflict between desirable ends, which is an indication of the achievement rather thatn the failure of capitalism cum democracy." Gaston V. Rimlinger has for over 20 years been a member of the facultyu of Rice University, where he is currently a professor of economics. Earlier, he was on the economics faculty at Princeton University, and from 1969 to 1972, he was an economic program adviser with the Ford Foundation. Dr. Rimlinger's publications include Welfare Policy and Industrialization in Europe, America and Russia, as well as a section on labor and social policy for the Camridge Economic History of Europe (forthcoming). This essay is abridged from an essay of the same title in the fall 1983 issue of Daedalus.
