The current monetary and economic crisis in Indonesia has had impact on a decrease in real GDP (gross domestic product), which in turn has an influence on poor performance of employment growth. Unemployment has recently increased dramatically, and so as the number of people living below the poverty line. The prolonged monetary and economic crisis has implication on other social sectors as well, such as on the increased number of labour force in informal sectors, job losses, worsening condition of child and woman workers, drop-out rates, and on decreased participation rates in primary education. In order to overcome these problems, the Government needs to do a number of effort: short term, medium term, as well as long term. One example of short-term effort is to reduce unemployment, particularly targeted to those workers who have recently lost their jobs, through labour-internsive projects designed to improve infrastructure in rural areas.
