Isi artikelSharecropping practice is one of the rural income distribution mechanisms that culturally exist in the most Indonesian rural society. The extent of its practice has gradually changed, especially on the land ownership, its values and its mechanism. The land ownership, now, is dominated by non-local citizen (absentee) due to the extensive land trade in the last decade even though that is prohibited by Agrarian Law. The absentee practice has been increased according to the rapid development in urban area and there is no law enforcement proceeded to this practice. This practice has changed the social structure and societal income in which most of the rural society have become crop labors (buruh tani). Even though there are many different opinions about its impact to the life quality of rural society, the decreasing number in rural land ownership by the local citizen could substantially lessen their life survival. This article further examines the impact of the absentee land sharecropping practices that exist in Pasemah Village, West Sumatra.
