Isi artikel
A high U.S. Government official discusses why the United States is becoming increasingly optimistic about the outlook for coping with the debt challenge-although serious problems undoubtedly will remain for some time. Analyzing the role that inflation played in creating conditions for debt problems to arise, Dr. Sprinkel describes in detail the comprehensive strategy that has been devised for making the debt problem manageable. This interview was conducted by Stewart W. Ramsey, Economic Impact's editor-in-chief. As Under Secretary of the Treasury for Monetary Affairs, Beryl W. Sprinkel is responsible for formulating and implementing U.S. international financial and credit policies, for developing U.S. policy toward international financial institutions, and for financing and managing the federal debt. Before being named to his current position, Dr. Sprinkel had been associated for 28 years with a large Chicago-based bank, Harris Trust and Savings Bank, most recently as executive vice-president and economist. He had also served as a consultant to various U.S. Government agencies and congressional committees.
