Isi artikelThe authors present a case for a new round of multilateral trade negotiations that would emphasize lowering trade barriers to make national economies more efficient, thereby adding to their capacity for growth. They offer seven strategic goals for a "growth round." Gary Clyde Hufbauer, who holds a chair in international financial diplomacy at Georgetown University, was a senior fellow with the Institute for International Economics (IIE) when this article was prepared. He formerly served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Trade and Investment Policy. Jeffrey J. Schott, a research associate with IIE, was formerly a senior associate with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and an international economist with the U.S. Treasury Department. This article is excerpted from their recent study, "Trading for Growth: The Next Round of Trade Negotiations." It has been updated by the authors.
