Abstract
While net CO2 exchange (NP) of leaves has been studied extensively in vascular epiphytes, there is little information on NP of reproductive structures. Since such information is important to evaluate the magnitude of investment in reproduction, we conducted a study with fruits of nine species of epiphytic orchids on Barro Colorado Island, Panama. Irrespective of the photosynthetic pathway of the leaves, fruits invariably showed some CAM activity as indicated by a significant nocturnal increase in titratable acidity. Photosynthetic capacity as determined in an oxygen electrode with dissected capsules was surprisingly high in some species, always showing positive net assimilation at higher PFD (photon flux density). Conversely, in situ CO2 exchange on intact fruits, which was studied in the two species Dimerandra emarginata and Caularthron bilamellatum, never yielded positive values. We estimate that internal recycling of respiratory CO2 reduces carbon losses in mature fruit by about 60% in Dimerandra emarginata, but only by 10% in Caularthron bilamellatum.
